Dragonflies and Damselflies Dragonflies and damselflies belong to the aquatic insect order or group known as Odonata. They are one of the oldest inhabitants of the earth dating back to over 250 million years. They are generally found near all kinds of inland waters including ponds, rivers, streams and also marshes and swamps. Usually the presence of odonates is a good indicator of the quality of the ecosystem. Dragonflies (Suborder - Anisoptera)
Dragonflies, the jeweled helicopters of the insect world, are generally stronger and more robust than damselflies. They are also fast and agile fliers. While at rest their wings are held away from their bodies.
Damselflies (Suborder - Zygoptera) Comparitively damselflies have slender bodies and a weak, fluttery, hovering flight. At rest their wings are held close to the body. Also their eyes are well separated unlike dragonflies.
